Galiano Island is an anomaly in that of all the Southern Gulf Islands it provides a fine balance between rural living and undeveloped forestland. Visitors can experience the natural beauty and Mediterranean climate (warm, dry summers) while hiking or biking or mopeding the many trails and back roads; or beachcombing or boating and fishing the quiet waters of Active Pass and Trincomali Channel. Whale watching and bird watching are two relaxing activities that are available to all ‘island’ guests. Orcas, in particular J pod (19 whales) visit the surrounding waters on a regular basis and amaze all that have the chance to see them as they feed and swim through the placid waters. The 150+ species of birds that inhabit the biodiverse environment that is Galiano Island can be easily spotted on the Bluffs or at Montague Harbour, Bodega Ridge or Bellhouse Park. For a very reasonable green fee, the recreational golfer can play The Galiano Golf Club’s 9-hole course that provides both a challenge and a relaxing atmosphere. Island visitors can chose to indulge in organized recreational activities or merely sit and enjoy the sun setting on the panoramic view of the surrounding islands as their cares are washed away with the endless tides. Romantic getaways abound and ‘island’ guests can easily access remote spots to relax and enjoy the natural beauty that makes Galiano “the Gem of the Gulf Islands”.
